International Gin & Tonic Day: A Toast to the Timeless Classic
19th October | International Gin & Tonic Day
Few drinks have stood the test of time quite like the classic Gin & Tonic. Refreshing, effortlessly simple and endlessly versatile, the humble G&T has earned its place as a firm favourite in bars and homes around the world.
And on 19th October, we're raising a glass to this much-loved combination as we celebrate International Gin & Tonic Day!
Whether you prefer yours crisp and classic with a wedge of lime, packed with fruity flavours or garnished with something a little more adventurous, there's a G&T for just about everyone.
A Little History Behind the G&T
Believe it or not, the Gin & Tonic wasn't originally created as the refreshing drink we know and love today.
Its origins can be traced back to British colonial India, where quinine, the bitter ingredient associated with tonic water, was used to help prevent malaria. To make the bitter taste more palatable, it was eventually mixed with ingredients including water, sugar, lime and gin.
What began as a practical combination gradually became a popular drink, evolving into one of the world's most recognisable cocktails.
Today, the G&T has come a long way from its early beginnings. With an incredible variety of gins, tonics and garnishes available, the possibilities are almost endless.
So, Why Do We Celebrate International Gin & Tonic Day?
International Gin & Tonic Day takes place every year on 19th October, but the story behind the celebration is perhaps not what you'd expect.
The occasion was established in honour of Mary Edith Keyburn, a devoted G&T lover who passed away on 19th October 2010 at the age of 95.
According to the story shared by her family, Mary was so fond of her favourite tipple that a Gin & Tonic was smuggled into hospital for her in a water bottle and served in a teacup!
Her granddaughter later helped establish International Gin & Tonic Day in her memory, turning a personal tribute into a celebration enjoyed by gin lovers around the world.
We think that's a pretty lovely reason to raise a glass.
The Secret to the Perfect Gin & Tonic
One of the best things about a G&T is its simplicity. Just a handful of ingredients can create something special, but a few small touches can make all the difference.
1. Start with a good gin
Whether you're a fan of traditional London Dry, something citrus-forward or a more contemporary botanical gin, choosing a gin you genuinely enjoy is the perfect starting point.
2. Don't forget the tonic
Tonic isn't just there to top up your glass! The right tonic can complement your gin's botanicals and bring out its distinctive flavours. From classic Indian tonic to lighter, floral or Mediterranean varieties, it's worth experimenting to find your favourite pairing.
3. Ice, ice, ice
A generous amount of ice helps keep your G&T beautifully chilled. Fill your glass with plenty of fresh ice before adding your gin and tonic.
4. Get creative with your garnish
A classic wedge of lime is always a winner, but why not mix things up? Try fresh grapefruit for a citrusy twist, cucumber for a refreshing finish or rosemary for something a little more aromatic.
Sometimes the smallest additions make the biggest difference.
