What’s the Difference between Single Barrel vs Small Batch Bourbon?

Bourbon is a classic American whiskey, embodying the nation’s heritage, craftsmanship and tradition with its, sweet, smooth and warm character. Yet the terms ‘single barrel bourbon’ and ‘small batch bourbon’ often create confusion, even among seasoned bourbon whiskey drinkers.

In this blog, we’ll explore the differences between single barrel and small batch bourbon. We’ll look at how bourbon is produced, aged and bottled, the best way to enjoy each, and whether or not you should add water. Plus, we’ll recommend some standout selections for you to try.

But first…

What is bourbon?

Bourbon is a grain whiskey made only in the USA. By law it has to be produced from a mashbill (recipe) of at least 51% corn and must be aged in new, charred oak barrels (or casks).

Although bourbon whiskey can be produced anywhere in the USA, the main centre of production is in the state of Kentucky, where it has been made since the late 18th century.

How is bourbon made?

The mash (mixture of the corn, and other grains) is boiled before a portion of previously fermented mash – known as ‘sour mash’ - is added. The fermented mash is then heated in a column still which separates the alcohol from water and impurities. The vapourised alcohol rises, condenses into liquid, and is collected.

A second distillation is in a modified copper pot or ‘doubler’ still, which refines the spirit further. The distilled spirit is then transferred to new, charred oak barrels and moved to a warehouse to begin a period of aging, which is usually around two years.

How is bourbon usually bottled?

It is important to understand that standard bourbon is made from hundreds of bourbon casks, picked out for their colour and flavour profile from different areas of the warehouse. The casks are poured into a large vat to blend together to make the desired flavour profile for that brand. The blend is then diluted with water to reach the desired strength before bottling, which must be at least 80 proof or 40% ABV.

So, what is small batch bourbon?

‘Small batch’ bourbon refers to whiskey produced by blending a limited number of barrels, typically between 10 and 50, to create a very distinct flavour profile. However, as the term lacks a legal definition, the exact number of barrels can vary among distilleries.

The small batch approach allows distillers to have more control over the blending process and to achieve a more consistent and desired flavour profile.

What is single barrel bourbon?

Single barrel bourbon goes a step further.

Instead of a bourbon being bottled from a small batch of barrels, single barrel bourbon is bottled from just one barrel. The bourbon will carry all the nuance of that barrel, carrying a unique imprint, influenced by the years it’s spent aging, the char level inside the barrel, the climate, and even its position in the warehouse. No two barrels will ever be the same.

The bottle labels are then usually marked with the date, the corresponding barrel number and the warehouse name or number.

Why is single barrel bourbon better?

Single barrel bourbon isn’t necessarily better than small batch bourbon, but the single barrel approach ensures that every release presents a unique character. It offers enthusiasts a singular, never-to-be-repeated journey into the essence of its origins - a true snapshot of time and place.

Single barrel bourbons are quite often, although not always, bottled at barrel strength, meaning that they have not been diluted with water before bottling, making them even more desirable – although usually they come at a higher price point.

How to drink?

Small batch bourbon can be enjoyed neat, ‘on the rocks’ or mixed into a cocktail like a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned.

Single barrel bourbon is perhaps best savoured neat or with a drop or two of water to bring out its nuanced flavours and aromas.
