A Good Foursquare With Some Issues

Although this release comes from an undisclosed distillery, after tasting this I am 100% sure this is from the Foursquare distillery. On the palate it is perhaps a tad less oak forward than the excellent yearly 12 year old cask strength official releases, I found this to be an enjoyable dram overall, albeit definitely overpriced. Does have some of the usual lovely Foursquare notes - dates, stewed fruits, nuttiness, honey, warming oak and various other types of baking spices. Also a rather interesting floral type edge, which I don't usually detect with Foursquare's official bottles. It is also fairly smooth and mellow, which I do enjoy, however I don't think the extra years of maturation have made this anymore complex than the official Foursquare releases.

Samaroli's transparency on the bottle is somewhat lacking - no information regarding continental vs tropical ageing, no information on what type of casks were used (it just states "selected casks"), no information on whether it is cask strength/natural colour/non-chill filtered. No distillation date and no bottling date - I understand it was distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2021, but the finer details are always appreciated by me. Instead of all the marketing nonsense on the back of the bottle they could have quite easily included all the above details. Furthermore, they utilise a screw cap rather than a cork, which for me feels a bit cheap. Foursquare got rid of the screw cap after the 2004 12 year old release - I have no…
