It’s an age-old question: single malt vs blended Scotch whisky – what’s the difference, and which is better? Well, the two share the same birthplace - Scotland, but their basic ingredients and production methods differ slightly.

We know that understanding the difference between single malt and blended Scotch whisky can help you find the right dram for your palate. So, in this blog, we’ll explore the main differences between these two types of Scotch whisky, looking at how they’re made, what they taste like and how best to drink them. Plus, we’ll recommend three whiskies from each category to try.

But first…

What is Scotch Whisky?

Scotch whisky has been produced in Scotland for centuries, with its origins tracing back to monks who first distilled it as a tonic to cure common ailments. Known as ‘uisge beatha’ or the ‘water of life’, this early form of whisky was then produced by Highland farmers who made it as a way of conserving unused barley crops. However, since the late 18th century, Scotch whisky has been produced on a commercial scale across all five of Scotland’s official whisky-making regions. Today, Scotch whisky is exported to 180 countries around the world.

Scotch whisky is governed by strict regulations about how it is produced, matured, bottled and labelled. For instance, it can only be made in Scotland from a fermented mash of cereals - including malted barley, wheat, oats and rye. To qualify as Scotch, all whisky must mature for a minimum of three years in an oak cask and must be bottled at no less than 40% ABV.

What is Single Malt Scotch Whisky?

Single malt Scotch whisky is defined as whisky made in Scotland from 100% malted barley. It must be distilled in copper pot stills and be the product of one single distillery – which is where the word ‘single’ comes from. Additionally, it must be matured in oak casks for at least three years and be bottled in Scotland.

Each distillery produces its own distinctive style, influenced by factors like location, water source, distilling methods and cask types. Single malt Scotch whisky is renowned globally for its exceptional quality and variety of flavours, which can range from fruity and floral, to rich and smoky.

What is Blended Scotch Whisky?

Blended Scotch whisky is made by combining one or more single malt whiskies with one or more grain whiskies.

The grain element of blended whisky is usually distilled in a continuous still rather than copper pot stills. The blending process, carried out under the supervision of a master blender, allows producers to create a whisky with a consistent flavour profile on a large scale at an accessible price.

Blended Scotch whisky accounts for nearly 90% of Scotch whisky sales globally. Often smoother and lighter than many single malt whiskies, blends are ideal for mixing into cocktails or sipping with ice.

So, Single Malt Scotch Whisky vs. Blended Scotch Whisky – Which is Best?

The answer is that it’s entirely up to you.

The preference for single malt whiskies versus blends is completely subjective and depends on individual taste preferences. Both single malts and blended whiskies have unique characteristics and qualities. Blended whisky may be smoother, lighter and more affordable but single malt Scotch whisky provides a snapshot of the flavour profile of a particular distillery and is often perceived as distinct, diverse and complex.
