Bruichladdich are renowned for their commitment to raw ingredients, pioneering terroir and championing an all Islay maturation which this whisky is a vision of.

A classic bourbon matured whisky, this gives notes of green fruits and gooseberry.

Bruichladdich - 18 Year Old (Re/Define)'s home is Distillery Location distillery, in the Islay region of Scotland.

Bruichladdich Distillery is a distillery on the Rhinns of the isle of Islay in Scotland. The distillery produces mainly single malt Scotch whisky, but has also offered artisanal gin. It is owned by Rémy Cointreau after being owned by Mark Reyneir.

One interpretation of the Gaelic word Bruichladdich is "stony shore bank", referring to a post-glacial raised beach, though an alternative, perhaps more pertinent translation may be "rocky lee shore".

Pronunciation : "brook-laddie"

    Almost A 5 Star Dram

There is a lot to enjoy with this 18 year old release from Bruichladdich. On the nose you get some of the typlical "funky" barnyard style notes that I associate with Springbank and Bruichladdich, albeit a little restrained. Some beautiful orchard fruit notes on the nose as well - apples and specifically peaches, followed by honey and scotch porridge. Subtle floral notes also linger on the nose and a slight mineral edge. For me on the nose the Port and Sauternes cask influence remains more in the background, which is the way I like it, allowing the Bourbon cask maturation to shine more. In short a beautiful nose.

The palate is quite oily in texture with a good viscosity, yet also quite delicate with notes of malted barley, peaches, citrus, raspberry tartness, floral, honey, subtle winey character, herbal, earthy and a hint of minerals. The finish is fairly long with some light oak, malted barley and honey sweetness. So, overall a very good dram, with a few shortcomings. The typical mineral notes for me are a bit too restrained. I personally enjoy Bruiachladdich with more mineral character, albeit those expressions are more youthful. Also, I feel it lacks a bit of punch - I would have preferred to see this being bottled at cask strength, or a higher strength than the 50% ABV.

So, overall a very good dram, but with the few shortcomings it does not quite hit 5 stars for me. It has got better with more time in the bottle, so 4.5 stars from me.
